What does the Applications button do?

What does the Applications button do?

The title pretty much says it all. I searched the site and couldn't find any info about what the Applications button does. I'd be much obliged if someone could fill me in (or at least point me in the right direction). Thanks!

Think of it as the sendto menu in windows. You select a few applications there, and pass the currently selected file as an argument to them. For instance I have notepad there, so i can just select a file, then select notepad from the application menu to load the selected file into notepad
